Directed by classically-trained guitar virtuoso and New England Conservatory alumnus, Tye Austin, M.M. founded his classical guitar academy in order to make elite musical training more accessible to classical guitar students of all ages and economic backgrounds in the Portland metro area. In addition to the standard classical guitar repertoire, students are encouraged to explore flamenco, jazz, finger-style, and other acoustic guitar styles. After your first FREE, no-obligation trial lesson, students may book weekly 1-hour lessons at our music studio, in your home, or online via Skype/Facetime/Zoom.
Tye’s standard curriculum encompasses classical/jazz music theory, ear training, music composition, audio/video recording, and music business. Lesson plans are custom tailored to help each student meet their musical goals. Students will learn how to read sheet music, tablature, chord charts, lead sheets, and/or other forms of musical notation. Alternatively, Tye often uses the Suzuki method, which encourages students to learn any musical work or genre of their choice via repetition and imitation.

In addition to studying classical and modern repertoire by historical composers, students will also learn how to compose original music in order to express their individual creativity. Students will also learn how to record an audio single for Spotify, and film a music video for YouTube at our recording studio. Furthermore, Tye will teach each student how to promote their music, build a brand, design a website, book gigs/tours, and use social media to succeed as an independent artist in the modern music industry.

Students are encouraged to perform at four public concerts per year during the first week of January, April, July, and October in order to share their musical progress with their family, friends, and local community. Students are encouraged to promote their new single, website, and musical services after their performance. In addition to solo repertoire, students will also perform chamber music with a guitar ensemble, string quartet, and/or symphonic orchestra. Each concert will be live-streamed and recorded to share with others online.

Tye also took masterclasses with Sharon Isbin, chair of guitar studies at The Juilliard School in NYC. He also studied flamenco guitar technique with David Martinez, chair of guitar studies at the Royal Music Conservatory of Granada in Andalusia, Spain. In his spare time, he enjoys surfing, snowboarding, kayaking, hunting/fishing, and mushroom foraging in remote wilderness areas far from civilization.
Tye Austin’s Guitar Method

Inspired by ancient Greek music theory, Tye incorporates all four mathematical branches of Pythagoras’ quadrivium (music, arithmetic, geometry, and astronomy) into his unique guitar method. Students will learn how to measure time by counting rhythms with Arabic numerals, and subdividing beats with basic fractions. Study the harmonic overtone series and learn how to classify chord progressions with Roman numerals. Explore Euclidian geometry by analyzing the structure of various musical forms (i.e. sonata, fugue, binary/ternary, rondo, strophic, etc.) to calculate fractal ratios such as the Fibonacci sequence and the Mandelbrot set. Furthermore, students will learn about Pythagorus’ Music of the Spheres (musica universalis, musica humana & musica instrumentalis). Investigate how musical instruments and the human body imitate celestial harmonies based on astronomical proportions between the earth, sun, moon and other planets in our solar system.
