Directed by classically-trained guitar virtuoso and Juilliard alumnus, Tye Austin, M.M. founded the Acoustic Guitar Academy in order to make elite musical training more accessible to students of all ages and economic backgrounds in Southern Oregon. We offer private and group lessons for the aspiring classical, flamenco, jazz, finger-style, folk, and/or acoustic pop guitarist. Once the fundamentals of guitar technique have been established, students may use the same principles to learn how to sing and/or play other instruments such as the piano, harp, violin, viola, cello, upright bass, ukulele, mandolin, and/or banjo. After your first FREE, no-obligation trial lesson, students may book weekly 1-hour lessons at our music studio, in your home, or online via Skype.

Our standard curriculum encompasses classical/jazz/pop music theory, ear training, composition/songwriting, audio/video recording, music business, and casual learning methods for the hobby-guitarist. Lesson plans are custom tailored to help each student meet their musical goals. Students can learn how to read sheet music, tablature, chord charts, lead sheets, and/or other forms of musical notation. Alternatively, we also teach students how to play music by using their eyes and ears while imitating their instructor’s example. Students are encouraged to study any song/piece or musical genre of their choice.

In addition to reciting classical and modern repertoire by master composers, students will also learn how to compose their own musical scores and poetic song lyrics in order to express their individual creativity as young artists. After memorizing an original or cover work, students will learn how to record a single, and film a music video using high-quality audio, video, and lighting equipment at our music recording studio. After completing this assignment, students will learn how to publish and promote their music on Spotify, iTunes, Youtube, and other popular music platforms. We also teach students how to build a brand, design a website, print business cards, book gigs, schedule a tour, and use social media to succeed as an independent artist in the modern music industry.

We organize four public concerts per year during the first week of January, April, July, and October in order for students to share their musical progress with their family, friends, and local community. Students are encouraged to promote their new single, website, and musical services after their performance. In addition to solo repertoire, students will also perform chamber music together as a studio guitar orchestra. Each concert will be live-streamed and recorded to share with others online.

As a composer, he has received commissions from Netflix, Harvard University, and the French Embassy to name a few clients. He has taught private guitar lessons, music theory/composition, and music business at the iSchool of Music campuses located in Long Island, NY and Shanghai, China. After completing his undergraduate studies at the Oregon Center for the Arts at Southern Oregon University, Tye received his master of music degree at the New England Conservatory in Boston. He pursued his post-graduate studies at The Juilliard School in Manhattan, and the Royal Music Conservatory of Granada in Spain. In his spare time, he enjoys surfing on the Oregon coast, backcountry snowboarding in the Cascades, whitewater kayaking class V+ rapids, and mushroom foraging/salmon fishing/elk hunting in remote wilderness areas far from civilization.

Tye Austin’s Guitar Method

Inspired by ancient Greek music theory, Tye incorporates all four mathematical branches of Plato’s quadrivium (music, arithmetic, geometry, and astronomy) into his unique guitar method. Students will learn how to measure time by counting rhythm with numbers and subdividing beats with basic fractions. We explore Euclidian geometry by analyzing melodies, harmonies, themes, motifs, phrases, movements, and suites found in various musical forms (i.e. sonata, fugue, binary/ternary, rondo, strophic, etc.) to calculate fractal ratios such as the Fibonacci sequence and the Mandelbrot set. Furthermore, students will learn about Pythagorus’ Music of the Spheres (musica universalis, musica humana & musica instrumentalis). We will investigate how musical instruments and the human body imitate celestial symphonies based on astronomical proportions between the earth, sun, moon and other planets in our solar system. Whenever possible, Tye employs the Socratic method in order to help students think critically, solve problems, and answer their own questions.
